Understanding EMR: Why Safety Stats Matter to Owners

Posted on January 05, 2026 by Safety Director

When hiring a general contractor, you often hear about schedules and budgets. But one metric is often overlooked until it's too late: the EMR (Experience Modification Rate).

What is EMR?

The Experience Modification Rate is a number used by insurance companies to gauge both past cost of injuries and future chances of risk. An EMR of 1.0 is the industry average. Anything below 1.0 is considered excellent (safer than average), while anything above 1.0 indicates higher risk.

Why Should Clients Care?

1. Lower Costs: Contractors with low EMRs pay less for insurance. These savings are often passed down to the owner in the form of lower overhead costs and more competitive bids.

2. Reliability: A high EMR suggests a chaotic job site. Accidents cause shutdowns, OSHA investigations, and project delays. Concur Construction maintains an EMR well below the industry average, ensuring your project stays on the Critical Path.

Our Zero-Incident Culture

We believe safety is not just a binder on a shelf; it's a mindset. From daily "toolbox talks" to mandatory PPE requirements, we ensure every worker goes home safely to their families every night.
